What turmoil! After a year and a half of considering Cameroon our home, we are leaving. Quite suddenly, we had to find homes for our two adorable cats, for eight rabbits, nine chickens, two ducks and five of the cutest little ducklings. And more importantly: jobs for Paul and Elfi. With less than two weeks to go - we are flying back on 20 February - the countdown is in full swing.

Yesterday, in front of Emma’s school, there was an addition to the usual array of people selling fish, masks, statuettes and bread. ‘Madam, are you interested in an Obama T-shirt?’ This morning, Symon’s driver Fabien came in with the biggest smile: ‘Sophie, did you see how I became the new president of the United States tonight?’ Most Cameroonians are happy: ‘one of them’ has become the most powerful man in the world.

Kidney dialysis in Yaoundé PDF Print E-mail

Like so many afflictions that are manageable in more affluent countries, in Cameroon, when your kidneys stop working, you die. Unless you happen to get a place in the WORTH programme. A couple of weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to witness first-hand the work of a few US doctors and nurses and their Cameroonian counterparts at the Yaoundé University Hospital dialysis centre.
