In a few weeks, the new school year starts. Elfi has spent the past nine months catching up and will now go to evening school to take his CEPE, the final exam for primary school. Meanwhile, we are also funding the school year of ten children. At fifteen to twenty-five euros a year, it seemed too good a bargain...

Elfi is making steady progress with his teacher and is loving it. His French is noticeably improving, he is learning about history and geography and is discovering the mathematical dimensions of the world around him. Most satisfyingly, Elfi is becoming more sure of himself, more outgoing. Along the way, we come across many unexpected lapses in his understanding of the world.

Last Saturday, I had invited Elfi's teacher to come over for a cup of coffee after their morning's lesson. The lesson lasted for no less than four hours (8 to 12) and by the time Elfi and M. Salomon (and my car) got back here it was 12.30, so we had lunch instead. I wanted to hear how M. Salomon thought Elfi was doing and also to see what he thinks of Elfi's dreams of becoming a nurse or a teacher. Are they realistic at all?

Good news all around: Elfi’s lessons are going well – his teacher says Elfi is much further than he had expected and should be able to start secondary school next year – and so is the Elfi fund. Already, there is enough money to pay for Elfi’s tuition this year and have some left over for next year’s school fees.

After five slow months in Africa I was pleasantly surprised by the speed with which people reacted to my request (or, as some called it: my 'blatant begging letter'). As Elfi's tuition fees for the first two months are now covered, I decided to be Dutchly quick about this and get things started. So today, Elfi is getting his first lesson!
