Finally: last Friday, at the Surprising Africa event during the Picnic multimedia conference in Amsterdam, The Butterfly Paper N°1 was launched. This beautifully designed book, which I spent most of last year writing, researches an inspiring, innovative approach to 'development work', as taken by Butterfly Works, one of my favourite organisations.

Honey (II): harvest

During my ‘honey trip’ to Ngaoundal in the Adamaoua delicious fresh honey combprovince, Paul the honey merchant took me to Tekel, a village near Ngaoundal. There, we accompanied two local bee-farmers on a harvesting trip through the forest – in the middle of the night, so the bees would be asleep! With only the light of our torches and flashes of lightning, we picked our way through the tall trees, in search of the hives.

Bulldozers

Yaoundé has an estimated 1,4 million inhabitants, about two-thirds of whom live in ‘slums’ or informal settlements. Granted, one slum is not the same as the next: here, many of the inhabitants do have access to ‘safe’ water and electricity. But still: whole families live in one or two small rooms, without running water or indoor plumbing. The worst aspect of slum life, however, is the insecurity: at any moment, you may be evicted or your house may be destroyed.
