On 26 November 2008, Emma turned three. We started off her birthday with a festive breakfast (Elfi bought cake) on the beautiful terrace of the appartment in Limbe where we were staying with Sigrid and Gert-Jan, who are over on a visit from the Netherlands. Then, after opening some presents and making phone-calls to granny and opa & oma, we continued our holidays, grateful that we are spared the chaos of birthday-parties and handing out sweets in school for one more year. Nonetheless, a birthday is of course the ultimate time for looking back. So, what's new in Emma's life? |

Yesterday, in front of Emma’s school, there was an addition to the usual array of people selling fish, masks, statuettes and bread. ‘Madam, are you interested in an Obama T-shirt?’ This morning, Symon’s driver Fabien came in with the biggest smile: ‘Sophie, did you see how I became the new president of the United States tonight?’ Most Cameroonians are happy: ‘one of them’ has become the most powerful man in the world. |

Over the summer, I bought second hand cameras for Elfi and Paul. Now, they both want to be photographers - Paul is already making some money on the side taking pictures of relatives and their kids. Elfi, I find, has a more artistic outlook on the art of photography. With a healthy sense of humour to boot. |
