Like so many afflictions that are manageable in more affluent countries, in Cameroon, when your kidneys stop working, you die. Unless you happen to get a place in the WORTH programme. A couple of weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to witness first-hand the work of a few US doctors and nurses and their Cameroonian counterparts at the Yaoundé University Hospital dialysis centre.

There was a dead child in the middle of the road.

As we drove into the village, traffic slowed down and tufts of grass had been put on the road to guide the cars first into the opposite lane, then back into our own. There was no oncoming traffic. The car in front of us swung back into the right-hand lane. That's when we saw her. Or him.
